Removal of Lesions – CO2 Laser Demonstration on seborrheic keratoses removal.

A skin lesion is any damage or abnormal change in the skin usually caused by disease or trauma. The types of lesions are seborrheic keratoses, actinic keratoses, warts, skin tags, syringomas and leukoplakias.

Some lesions itch, but they generally do not ache. Also, seborrheic keratoses are benign despite looking like atypical moles or melanomas. Seborrheic keratoses are usually pigmented when they appear on skin. As a result, this skin condition can also be classified as a pigmentation problem.

Seborrheic keratosis becomes more common as you age, and it’s more likely to affect people who have lighter skin tones.

Seborrheic keratosis usually appears on your:

  • face
  • chest
  • shoulders
  • back

Growth commonly :

  • are round or oval shaped
  • vary in size from very small to more than 1 inch across
  • appear in groups of two or more
  • are brown, black, or light tan in color
  • have a waxy or scaly surface
  • are slightly elevated above skin level
  • Often these growths look as though they’ve been pasted onto your skin. Sometimes they may take on a wart-like appearance. They generally aren’t painful or tender to the touch, unless they’ve become irritated from rubbing or scratching against your clothing.

This video demonstrates how Dr Guna surgically removes the lesions using the CO2 Laser.

On the table is a 50 year old patient with seborrheic keratoses which she has been having for the past 10 years. The growth is getting larger and thicker.
The patient is wearing a pair of medical goggles and the affected area has been numbed using the anesthetic cream.
This procedure requires about 30 to 45 minutes to complete the laser surgery.

After the surgery to remove the lesions are done, antibiotic cream is applied to the affected area and complete healing will take about 4 to 7 days.
Minimum downtime and the result is excellent.

CO2 or Carbon dioxide laser is a very popular laser in the cosmetic surgical practice.
A fractional CO2 laser can be used to improve acne scars and traumatic scars by smoothening them by a technique called laser resurfacing.
The CO2 laser is light of a particular wavelength which when applied on the skin causes cells containing water to get very heated up and they then undergo self-destruction resulting in their ablation or removal.

The laser light beam can be focused and de-focused depending on whether you need to cut tissue or vaporize tissue. Also with the use of high peak power and short pulse intervals, there is minimal damage to surrounding tissues.
Due to the precision and power of this Laser machine, CO2 Laser procedures should only be done by trained doctors.
